Shower Caddy essentials for college

shower caddy essentials

Mesh Shower Caddy: Shower caddys coming in all shapes and sizes but, please, take my advice on this one…get a plastic version that has HOLES for drainage.  There’s nothing more disgusting than seeing mold at the bottom of your caddy, which WILL happen if you don’t get one with proper filtration.

Body Pouf: A classic.  You might want to buy a few at a time since you do need to replace these every few months.

Drybar The Morning After Shower Cap: For the non-hair-washing days, a good shower cap is a MUST.

Gillette Venus Breeze Razor: I’ve been a loyal Gillette Venus user since high school so why mess with perfection?

Revlon Pumice Stone: I’ve tried lots of foot scrubbing tools and this is honestly one of the best.  You want to keep your feet freshly scrubbed while running around campus.

Orlando Pita Argan Haircare Collection: Guys, this trio is only $25!  I mean, that’s a serious steal.  You get a shampoo, conditioner and a hair treatment oil, all formulated by the fab Orlando Pita.  If this existed while I was actually in college, I would be obsessed.

Yes to Blueberries Ultra Hydrating Body Wash: You need a hydrating body wash since dorm rooms are infamous for dry, stale air.

Skintimate Shave Gel in “Raspberry Rain”: I’ve always loved the scent of berries and this shaving gel is really moisturizing and easy to use in a small space (e.g. dorm shower stall).

Kiehl’s Washable Cleansing Milk: Truth be told, I didn’t even wash my face unti after college (my skin was THAT perfect), but I’m a big believer of splurging in a quality cleanser, which this one is.

Havaianas Flip Flops: You MUST protect your feet.  This is non-negotiable.

Reader Question: do I really need toner?

Do I really need toner

Kiehl’s Cucumber Herbal Alcohol-Free TonerBiore Blemish Treating Astringent | Kate Somerville Clarifying Treatment Toner | Mario Badescu Special Cucumber Lotion | Boscia Balancing Facial Tonic

Question:

Hey Jamie!

I have a question…what is the purpose of toner? Is it necessary? AND, after I take off my makeup (using Queen of the Quarter Life Crisis-approved Neutrogena makeup removing wipes) and wash my face, when I put the toner on should there be dirt or some kind of grey to brown on the cotton ball or does that mean that my face wash isn’t working well enough?

xo,

“E”

Answer:

Hey “E”!

That’s a great (and really common) question.  My first experience with toner was when I did PR for Sea Breeze back in the day…that stuff was hard core, let me tell you, but it had a cult-like following.  Here’s the story: toners are greatly misunderstood.

What are they? Toners are traditionally used to balance the skin’s pH and remove anything that your cleanser missed (hence why you see color on your cotton ball after you use it).  Newer toners actually can be really hydrating and have added benefits with good-for-you ingredients, depending on the product.

Should I use one?  Since there are so many different kinds, you just have to do some research to see which toner is best for your skin (my favorites are above).  Some contain alcohol, which removes excess oil and helps prevent breakouts but can also dry out skin.  However, most derms say that anyone with eczema or rosacea (ahem, me!) should avoid them due to sensitivity.

  • If you have oily skin, look for toners with salicylic acid, sulfur, or tea tree oil
  • If you have dry skin, grab ones with panthenol, hyaluronic acid, aloe, and glycerin

Good luck!

Jamie

Reader Question: How do I simplify my skincare regimen?

Simplify your skincare regimen

One of the most common reader questions that I get is on the topic of simplifying your skincare regimen. What do you REALLY need to use? How often?  In what order?  When?  These are all completely valid questions, especially given the fact that beauty brands come out with dozens of new products every year.  And, here’s a secret, a lot of the “new” products are really just the same formula with a new name and new product packaging!  It’s true.  So here, I break down exactly what you need: a simple skincare regimen with the fewest products possible.  Of course, you can always add treatments (based on your specific concerns) into your regimen but this list is the bare necessities, and a few product recommendations.  I’ve included high-end brands and drugstore brands, so you can decide where you want to splurge.

The 4 Products You Need for Your Nails

4 nail products you need

With thousands upon thousands of nail products on the market, all claiming to solve ALL of your problems, it can definitely be confusing as to what you actually need to achieve your best nails possible. Here, I break down for you the four products that you should be using, no matter what.  Trust me, use these four and you’re good to go!

1. All-In-One Treatment

When you’re crammed for time, it’s best (and easiest) to use a strengthening base and top coat in one.  Hydrating panthenol will smooth and glaze nail beds, while also preventing your nails from chipping.  Make sure to first apply this treatment to clean, dry nails as a base coat and let dry. Then brush on one to two coats of your favorite nail color and let dry. Finish with the Double Duty treatment as a shiny top coat.

Favorite: Sally Hansen Double Duty

2. Polish Remover

I prefer a polish remover with a light, calming scent (like lavender), which will swiftly and effectively take off your darkest, most glittery polish just as fast as you applied it.  Sure, in a pinch cheap or generic polish remover will do, but I really love the version from Zoya, which smells great and actually gets all of my nail polish off.

Favorite: Zoya Remove Plus

3. Nail Strengthener

This calcium-enriched formula toughens nails, without altering the color of your polish!  It’s recommended for use twice a week and will definitely help strengthen nail beds within a few weeks time. I can’t recommend this strengthener enough.  The fact that you can actually apply it OVER your nail polish is truly amazing and I’ve definitely noticed a huge difference in the health of my nails.

Favorite: O.P.I Nail Envy

4. Cuticle Oil

Cuticles simmer down with just a drop of this cure-all product.  Infused with sweet-almond, jojoba and vitamin E oils, your nails will never be softer.  This is my secret weapon!  For anyone who gets dry cuticles, this oil is your best bet.

Favorite: CND Solar Oil

How to be the coolest aunt ever

how to be the coolest aunt ever

It’s no secret that I have an obsession with my 4-year-old nephew, Mark.  He’s adorable, he’s smart, he’s…related to me.  It’s pretty simple, really.  Not that I’m any kind of aunt-ing (yes, I made that up) expert or anything, but I’ve noticed there are really only four things that you need to be the best aunt ever.

1. An iPhone: There’s no better distraction than an iPhone and/or iPad.  My nephew discovered the Cake Doodle app on my iPhone and refused to give my phone back to me until the battery actually died.

2. Cute clothes for him/her: I’ve learned that the nephew has a thing for sharks (who doesn’t?) and the faux lifeguard t-shirt was just too cute to pass up.  Really, anything at The Children’s Place is great because the clothes are adorable and cheap.

3. Yes To BABY Carrots Face + Nose Wipes: These are positively genius.  After spending a week here in LA with the little booger machine, these are a LIFE SAVER.  As an aunt, I feel like I’m not really obligated to hold my nephew’s used tissues and these are 98% natural and even contain Vitamin E.

4. A Spiderman juice cup: Kids need their juice cups, that’s a fact.  Since Mark is obsessed with all things superhero, I knew that this Spiderman version would be a winner.  No complaints during juice time, that’s for sure.
