Reader Question: Vacation Makeup

Question: Hi Jamie!  I’m going to Hawaii…I like to wear makeup but don’t want to look done up.  What are my options?

“D”

Hi “D”!

Great question because that’s something that every girl struggles with, especially if you have problem skin (like most of us do).  Here are my top picks:

L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Clear Self-Tanning Gel: Honestly, the easiest way to avoid wearing makeup is to “perfect” your skin…and going a shade or two darker is the best way to camoflauge imperfections.  I’d self-tan the night before you leave (after showering, shaving and scrubbing) to prep your skin.

ARCONA REOZONE 40: You can’t forget the SPF (cause I won’t let you!)!  ARCONA makes several good SPF products that are broad-spectrum (protects you from both UVA and UVB rays) and are also suitable for all skin types.

Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20: A tinted moisturizer is your best bet as far as foundation while on vacation at the beach.  This Tarte version is super light, goes on smooth and provides just enough coverage…bonus for the additional SPF 20.

Maybelline Volum’Express The Falsies Waterproof mascara: A little waterproof (very important!) mascara is just enough to make your eyes pop…no eyeshadow or eyeliner necessary in the sand.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15: This lip treatment is standard issue in the beauty world.  I love that it’s super moisturizing (again, with SPF) and also provides a light hint of color.

Have so much fun on your trip!

xo,

Jamie

Ciel Spa at the SLS Hotel, Thanks to Rue La La

A few months ago, the reps for Rue La La reached out to me with an a-pause-mazing deal.  Basically, they had a deal with Ciel Spa at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills for a 60 minute facial for only $90!  Seriously.  Now, I definitely don’t get facials as often as I should (shame, I know) but I loooove the SLS Hotel and so yeah, I jumped at the chance…well sort of.  Putting it all out there, I totally forgot about the Rue deal and then found the email right before it was about to expire.  Yeah, I’m honest.  But let me tell you…finding this facial deal was FATE.  The Ciel Spa did not dissapoint; it actually has one of the nicest waiting rooms/lounges that I’ve ever seen at a spa and my facial was to die for.  I’ve been through a lot of stress lately (more on that later) and it’s been showing on my skin, for sure.  My facialist evaluated my skin and told me the usual “your skin is so dry!” “your skin is so red!” Yeah, yeah, hunny…I know.  I have dry, sensitive skin that’s acne-prone and I have Rosacea.  WELCOME TO MY TWENTIES.  After I listened to the lecture, she did her thing cleaning out my pores, exfoliating and moisturizing.  One tip that I took with me – use more hyaluronic acid.  I’ve always know H.A. was good stuff but never really made it a point to actually use a product focused on the ingredient.  The facialist seemed to think that using more H.A. would help with my dryness and would still allow me to (every once in awhile) use Retinol, even though my skin is so sensitive.

I immediately dug through my beauty closet and found Arcona’s Magic White Ice, a daily hydrating gel serum that hydrates with hyalruronic acid and cranberry complex and neutralizes free radicals with vitamins B-5, C and E.  I am LOVING this stuff so far.  I put it on after I cleanse my face and then apply a heavy moisturizer (like my Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica).  LOVE.

Winter beauty essentials

So it feels like I literally just did my Fall essentials but it is that time, it’s officially winter and I have a whole new list of obsessions.  Each of these products are currently sitting on my bathroom sink and are almost dunzo.

Bare Escentuals Winter Escapade Buxom Babes Big & Healthy Lip Polish: this limited edition lipgloss is the perfect gift…for myself.  Yes, I said it.  I love it because it lets you sample four different shades and they all come in cute, travel-friendly sizes.

Jurlique Love Balm: Think TLC to go.  For $15 you get the ultimate product for moisturization and it comes in the cutest, most usable little pot.  What I adore about this product is that you can use it literally everywhere.  This means lips, elbows, cutciles, hands, knees, legs, nose, feet, etc.  A travel must-have for sure.

ARCONA Magic White Ice:I looooooove this daily hydrating gel.  Moisturize your skin without clogging pores and also protect against environmental damage.  This product uses white cranberry complex and hyaluronic acid to neutralize free radicals.  It’s cooling and fabulous.

Harajuku Lovers “Snow Bunnies” Baby: Ah, my love for all things Gwen Stefani will never end.  Though I’m a loyal fan of “G”, lately I’ve been wearing “Baby” and I can’t help but love her cute winter outfit.

LATHER Skincare Coconut Creme Body Whip: It’s truly a tropical vacation in a plastic container. As soon as I open up this jar, I immediately imagine myself on a Hawaiian beach, with a cocktail, naturally.  Coconut oil provides light moisturization while aloe vera provides calming relief to sensitive, irritated or sun-burned skin.  Perfect for a cold, winter day or after my imaginary tropical vacaton.

Fall beauty essentials

you may have seen my post on my summer beauty essentials?  Well, it’s getting coldish (meaning it’s 60 degrees at night) here in LA so I thought it was about time I let you guys in on my latest Fall must-haves.  Let me know your thoughts…yay or nay?

LATHER avocado mint hair repair is an intensive moisture therapy hair product that restores strength and shine after all those months spent in the summer sun.  Plus, it smells delish.

I’m not usually a fan of dietary supplements and not because I think they don’t work, but really because they usually taste disgusting.  BORBA Gummi Boosters prove me completely wrong.  These are DELICIOUS.  I was actually really sad when I ran out.  The skin-balancing confections feature Acai and are specifically formulated to work with your body’s unique chemistry to improve skin clarity, combat free-radical damage and increase the skin’s radiant look and feel.  Two thumbs up.

RIMMEL LONDON Glam’Eyes Lash Flirt Mascara is pretty awesome.  I love nothing more than a deep-pigmented black mascara and Glam’Eyes gives 2X blacker pigment and up to 80% longer lashes!  Love this.

LAVANILA The Healthy Lip Shine makes me happy. With 100% pure ingredients like apricot, jojoba and sunflower oil, lips get a super healthy shine.  The sheer wash of color is perfect for any occassion and all of the lipglosses are formulated without parabensand sulfates, making it a truly healthy lipgloss.

Maybe you read my review of ARCONA spa on TheFairest.com blog?  Well the ARCONA Eye Dew is equally as awesome.  The protective anti-aging formula is ideal under makeup and for hydrating and revitalizing the eye area.  Shea butter and hyaluronic acid act as a barrier to the elements.

CLARINS Beauty-Flash Balm is the ideal pick-me-up to erase the signs of stress and fatigue.  I’m loving this for those mornings I feel like crap and those after-work parties where I need a quick refresher.  So chic.
