Jelly Sandals/accessories: welcome to my childhood

jelly sandals for adults

To say that I was a child obsessed with jelly sandals would be too mild a statement to make.  I was beyond obsessed.  I wore them in the winter…with socks…in New York.  Yep (see photo below). Then there’s that.  So yeah, I have to be honest and admit that I kind of love that the whole jelly sandal/jelly accessory look is still chic.  Here are my favorites:

1. Nasty Gal Light Bright Bag: This bag reminds me of the purse that I had to use when I worked retail.  You know the one…it proved that we weren’t stealing anything from the store.  Somehow, I love the pink version more.

2. MARC by Marc Jacobs Jelly Dots iPhone 5 Case: Green is my favorite color, truth.  I’m really into this iPhone case for many reasons, which I will let you just assume.

3. Old Navy Jelly Sandals: A chic, yet affordable version, of the 80s staple.

4. Stuart Weissman “Jealous” Sandal: These are probably the closest to the 80s version that i’ve seen in awhile…and yeah, they are pricey, but I can’t tell you that I wouldn’t buy them, purely to re-live my youth.

5. Target Xhileration Clear Jelly Wristlet: The perfect beach essential. I’ll use this to hold my ID, credit card and cell phone when I’m at the beach and/or pool.

6. C. Wonder Logo Jelly Tote: This jelly tote just exudes summer to me.  I’m obsessed.

The Cutest Lingerie for spring

cute spring lingerie

My good friend, Kelley Herman, is probably one of the most talented lingerie designers in the country, in my opinion, and so when I asked her to give me (and you guys!) the scoop on her top lingerie pieces for spring, I was honestly too excited for words when I saw her choices.  Admittedly, my own lingerie closet has grown by leaps and bounds (and style) since meeting Kelley back in 2009, when I first moved to LA.  So here are her top choices for spring, and why:

1. Topshop Sketch Floral Print Bralet:  “The longline bra is the new bandeau!  I like the all over lace ones for this summer but I also like the ones that look like a little cropped tops and not so much like a bra! (like this version and #4 below).  The Topshop version is nice because it comes in many sizes, so you have a better chance of getting a good fit, which is super important in any bra- even a fun novelty one.”

2. Forever21 Seamless Layering Bra: “I live in these things, especially on those super hot LA nights…and for $5 a pop, it doesn’t matter that they start falling apart after about five washes.”

3. Blackheart Lace Longline Bralette: “The Blackheart version is nice because it has a lightweight foam cup with an under-wire, so you get the modesty and support of a bra.”

4. Free People Secret Garden Lace Bra

5. Victoria’s Secret Dream Angels Demi Bra: “I love this bra!  The lace band looks sexy when it peeks out of tanks, and the cups are super smooth, even under tight tees.”

6. Victoria’ Secret Lace Trim Mini Cheekster Panty: “Love this mini cheekster!  it makes your butt look so cute!  I just wish it didn’t come in all of these dorky prints…where’s the solid black?!”

Reader Question: Where can I find cheap statement necklaces?

cheap statement necklaces

Question: Hey Jamie,

I need help. I need retail therapy, but am not rich enough to buy as many new colorful things as will make me happy. I believe you will know the answers: where do I get inexpensive statement necklaces?!  I need a style guide- please help!

“S”

Hi “S”!

I feel your pain.  One of my fashion blogger friends, Sydne Summer, get me hooked on the costume jewelry from Forever21, especially for statement necklaces!  It would be easy to buy one of the gorgeous (or designer) $300 versions, but even easier to get THIRTY statement pieces from Forever21, for the same price.  Here are a few of my favorites (clockwise).  Happy shopping!

Belly Button Rings: Yes, I’m Trying To Make Them Happen (AGAIN)

belly button rings are back

When I saw this article on Fashionista, I got legit giddy.  Why?  Because I got my belly button pierced in 2001 and literally JUST took it out for a week…and what happened?  The top hole closed up.  In ONE WEEK.  WTF?

I stand by my decision here, ok?  While I’m definitely not going to get my naval re-pierced (for the THIRD time, mind you), I still think belly button rings need to come back.  Let me be jealous of it.  Admittedly, I have gotten a few eyebrow raises, especially over the past two or three years, but I always took it with stride.  Then BAM- Beyonce rocks a belly ring in her latest H&M ad.  So take that, haters.

The belly button ring is BACK (almost).

Let’s make it happen, guys.

The best mother’s day gifts

the best mother's day gifts

Ok, so I’m a big believer that there really isn’t an answer to the “best” mother’s day gift, since the “best” gift really depends on your mother.  But hey, these are gifts that I know MY mom would absolutely love…and that’s good enough for me.

1. Maya Brenner Letter Necklace: What’s not to love about the initials of your children (Jamie and Melissa)?!  I feel like any mother would adore these dainty necklaces.

2. Jouer Cosmetics Deluxe Leather Train Case: I don’t know about you guys but my mom’s makeup case is a complete disaster.  I want to get my mom something classic, simple and chic for her to store her daily makeup products.

3. Flavor Infused Water Bottle: Unlike myself, my mom doesn’t really like drinking water.  From what I hear, infusing water with fruit seems to help the anti-water people get it down in a somewhat enjoyable way.

4. Drybar Buttercup Blow Dryer: I don’t think my mom has purchased a new blow dryer since the early 90s, which is exactly why I want to get my mom a super modern, turbo-infused blow dryer that will literally knock her socks off.

5. Pottery Barn Glass Cloche Jewelry Storage: There’s something really elegant and whimsical about this jewelry holder and, funny enough, my mom’s name starts with an “A,” so I can already imagine what my mom’s jewels will look like in this holder.

The 2013 Met Gala

the met gala

I love, love, loooove The MET Gala.  Why is it different from any other celebrity party?  Well, for one, the fashion is always way more avant garde and this year the theme was “PUNK: From Chaos to Couture.”  YES.  While there were some “WTF was she thinking” outfits, I’m completely in love with these three looks:

1. Blake Lively: Blake, who claims that she doesn’t have a stylist, worked with Gucci Première to design this amazing dress that kind of makes me think of Black Swan.  Her makeup in word word?  Flawless.  Her makeup artist, Elaine Offers, used NARS on Blake.  “It starts with Blake’s signature approach: luminous beautiful skin,” said Offers about the look she created for Blake. “We created a serious eye shape as a nod to the punk theme by building on a smoky eye and winging it outward. With the diaphanous layers of her skirt and a light lip, it comes together as being both glamorous and edgy.”

2. Anne Hathaway: To be perfectly honest, I was so not impressed with Anne’s look from the Oscars but guys, she totally killed it in this Valentino dress, complete with Debbie Harry-inspired platinum blonde hair.  Anne’s makeup also looks totally flawless and, according to her makeup artist, Adam Bereuchaud, he used Laura Mercier on the actress.  Specifcally, Breuchaud gave a subtle nod to the event’s punk theme by creating a bold, “electric blue” smoky eye to complement Anne’s flawless, porcelain skin.

3. Gwen Stefani: To no surprise, I clearly love what my girl Gwen wore to the gala (a Maison Martin Margiela cut-out gown and Fred Leighton jewels).  I can’t think of anyone more appropriate than the punk rock princess herself.

Bonus content: Jeannine has the scoop on a few of the hottest manis from the night and THIS, just for shits and giggles. I’m obsessed with Nicole Richie’s hair.
