Super Bowl 2013 Survival Skills (for all of us who don’t care)

The Super Bowl.  Yes…I bet you never thought that you’d read about such an event on THIS blog, right?  Well there comes a time when you (and I) have to accept that the Super Bowl is an event that you can’t avoid, especially if you have a boyfriend, husband or even a ton of guy friends.  Here’s my cheat sheet to surviving the most boring day of the year:

1. Learn which teams are playing.  You don’t need to know details, just learn their names, colors and what city/state they’re from.  This year, it’s the San Francisco (California!) 49ers versus the Baltimore (Maryland) Ravens.  San Fran is red and gold and the Ravens are a purplish blue and black.  Check.

2. Find a good cocktail that you can drink for the whole game.
Belvedere Vodka created a delicious concoction called “The Big Easy,” obviously named after New Orleans (where the SB is taking place) and I’m way into it.

  • 1.5 oz. Belvedere Citrus
  • 3/4 oz. Canton ginger liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • Apple cider top
  • Shake and strain citrus, lemon juice and Canton into a highball filled with cubed ice
  • Garnish with a lemon slice

3. Accessorize with “your” team’s colors.  Now, I don’t have a team, per se, but since I live in California, I feel the need to support the 49ers.  And luckily for me, I have a TON of red and gold but if you don’t, try just throwing on some gold bracelets and earrings.  Easy.

4. Find some (somewhat) healthy food to eat.
Aside from Halloween, I can’t really think of another day where you might possibly eat more junk food.  Not that I don’t LOVE fried wings and nachos, but ya know…we gotta keep it in CHECK.  Here a few great, healthy recipes that I found on various sites:

Lemon Drop Chicken Wings

Roasted Tomato Hummus

Zucchini French Fries

Quinoa Stuffed Bell Pepper

Vodka: Ohhhh so many options

Kids, who would’ve thought that my favorite kind of hard booze had SOOOO many uses?!  Not me, that’s for sure.  I recently saw a BellaSugar article that made me start thinking that I need to research the many uses for the clear liquid.  And, away we go:

  • Deodorize laundry: Forget to wash your favorite pair of jeans?  I haven’t tried it yet (oh, but I will), but apparently you can sray a little vodka on your clothes to freshen them up, Febreeze style.
  • Soothe jellyfish stings: As someone who got a jellyfish sting in the inner thigh before, I can personally attest to the fact that yeah…it HURTS.  Thankfully, the boat guys had some amonia but it’s good to know that if they didn’t, I could just make my way to the nearest pub.
  • Preserve cut flowers: Not that I get flowers very often (unless they’re from my DAD), but apparently adding a little vodka and a teaspoon of sugar makes cut flowers last longer.
  • Clean your jewelry and razors: I always (sorta) knew vodka was an antiseptic but I didn’t know that it could actually CLEAN objects like razors and jewelry.  According to BellaSugar, drop your razor (blade side down) into a cup of vodka and the alcohol will disinfect thne blade and stave off rusting.  Kind of amazing.
  • Freshen your breath and/or feet: Ok, so you’re not supposed to actually swallow, duh, but vodka makes a pretty sweet mouthwash.  Swish about a half shot around your mouth for 30 seconds.  AND, if you have stinky feet, much like your dirty clothing, vodka will also help with killing the odor.
  • Add shine to your hair: Now, this I HAVE to try.  Multiple websites say that adding a shot’s worth of vodka into your deep conditioner will lower your hair’s pH, helping the cuticles to close, and sealed cuticles mean tons of shine and not so much frizz.  AWESOME.

But, if you’re lazy like me, here’s a hot set of vodka shot glasses and LUSH Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub, an awesome scrub that already has vodka in it.

Cocktail Alert: Bride of Frankenstein Martini

Halloween cocktails are always so fun and creative.  I just tried out this delish vodka martini and, as if you didn’t already need a reason to drink, (BELVEDERE)RED(i.e. the vodka to use) donates 50% of the profits of sale benefit HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.  Here’s how to create the cocktail at home:

  • 50ml (BELVEDERE)RED
  • 12.5ml Honey water
  • Dash lemon juice
  • Fresh sage leaves
  • 25ml pressed apple juice

Cocktail Alert: The Moscow Mule

It’s National Vodka Day!  Who knew?  And since I’m a total vodka and tequila girl, here’s my favorite Moscow Mule recipe, using Russian Standard Vodka.  The full-bodied wheat flavor of the vodka compliments the sweet and spicy ginger beer and allows the citrus from the lime to really shine and, of course, it’s best served in a copper mug.  Enjoy

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Russian Standard Vodka
  • 4 oz. of ginger beer
  • 1 lime wedge
  • Ice

– Build cocktail and ice over

– Add Rusian Standard Vodka

– Squeeze a wedge of lime and top with ginger beer

The Monday Rundown

Pier 1 Tierdrop Glass Vases: I’m loving these silver vases.  They’re super modern and chic.  Enough said.

J. Crew Zigzag Sequin Tee: I literally just tried this top on in J. Crew in size XS.  It fit but didn’t look good…I had the salesperson look up all the size smalls in the LA area and she could only come up with one store, in the valley. Grab this up in your size ASAP before they’re all sold out.  Obsessed.

Belvedere Pink Grapefruit vodka: I love Belvedere vodka and I LOVE grapefruit.  What’s not to like here?

Slatkin & Co. “Suntan” candle: A candle that smells like heaven is super rare and I looooove this summer “suntan” scent.

The Monday Rundown

City of Style: Exploring Los Angeles Fashion, from Bohemian to Rock: As far as fashion in LA, this New Yorker can attest that this book is spot on.  It’s my new favorite coffee table item.

Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Sunscreen for Body SPF 50: As you know, I love, love, love all things Kiehl’s…so when they recently launched a new body SPF, I had to try it.  As predicted, it’s amazing.  It’s lightweight, non-greasy and, of course, paraben-free.

Vodka-infused gummy bears: This idea came to me last week and I’ve been enjoying the result ever since.  It’s the perfect summer party snack…or, while you’re watching TV alone. Ha.

House of Harlow 1960 Two-Tone Horn Stacking Ring: As per usual, I love all things HOH1960.  This ring, from the new collection, is no exception. I ordered it last week, it came, I’m obsessed.

Cocktail Alert: The Ferguson

Fergie sipping on “The Ferguson” by Voli Light Vodka at the Don A Matrix Launch at Confidential Beverly Hils

I didn’t end up celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year since I was honestly exhausted after my Woodstock-themed birthday party with Sydne (more on that later) but that didn’t stop me from making this amazing cocktail in celebration.  And, as a bonus, it’s only 118 calories!

The Ferguson

  • 1.5 oz. Voli lemon vodka
  • 3/4 oz. apple pucker
  • 2 fresh lemon squeezes
  • Top with soda and add apple slices for garnish
