Reader Question: Skincare Regimen For Oily Skin

glowing skin

Hey Jamie,

I love your skincare posts!  Do you think you can put together a skincare regimen for someone in their twenties with oily skin?  I need a new regimen and am totally lost.

Thanks!

“G”

Hi G!

First off, I’m glad you like my skincare posts- they’re definitely my favorite 🙂  And good call on putting together something for someone with oily skin.  Since I’m dry/sensitive, I tend to review mostly products for my own skin so your email definitely got my attention.  I wanted to get some oily skin expert input so I reached out to the O.G. beauty blogger, Nadine Jolie Courtney, who happens to have oily skin herself for some good reccos!  Here’s what I put together. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Your main goals are to keep your pores clear and don’t over-dry (which can result in rebound greasiness), all while paying attention to anti-aging as well.

MORNING:

Cleanser// Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash (a Nadine pick): This stuff is a classic for a reason. I think it’s a great choice for you since it has 2% salicylic acid, which will help clear the oil off your face from the night before and give you a fresh face.

Moisturizer// Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15: This baby is a shine-reducing moisturizer that creates an immediate matte surface and controls oil for up to 8 hours…plus it has a little SPF, which is fab.

SPF// Pevonia Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 (a Nadine pick): Since the SPF 15 from the Murad moisturizer isn’t enough protection, this sunscreen from Pevonia is a great choice.  According to Nadine, it doesn’t cause breakouts which anyone with oily skin is usually fearful of when they see the word “hydrating” in a product name.

Extras// Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets: They have fancier versions but the old-school Clean & Clear oil absorbing sheets will certainly do the trick. Keep these in your purse just in case you get greasy during the day.

NIGHT:

Cleanser// Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser: You can use this awesome cleanser with or with out a Clarisonic and it’s great because the clay helps minimize oily skin and pore size, yet it’s still gentle enough for every day use.

Serum// Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Serum: Since you’re skin is already hydrated naturally, you can use a good serum instead of a traditional moisturizer.  I LOVE this one from Neutrogena and it will also give you tons of anti-aging benefits (e.g. lots of Retinol).

Treatment// Kate Somerville RetASphere Micro Peel: Since you don’t have to go easy on your skin like I do, you can do this glycolic peel (10% which is AWESOME) every other day. It will help with anti-aging again (can’t get enough, trust me) and also help with oil and pore size.

Eye Cream// RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream: An eye cream is a must and this version from RoC is a classic that I love for pretty much any skin type.

Extras// Boscia Green Tea Oil-Control Mask: If and when you’re feeling like you need a little extra this mask from Boscia is great because it immediately eliminates excess shine and helps minimize oil production.  Antioxidant-rich Japanese green tea naturally nourishes skin, cucumber and burdock root deeply cleanse pores, and silica absorbs oil and prevents light reflection for a completely mattified complexion.

Xo,

Jamie
