The Hair Files: Balayage at Warren-Tricomi (and a head shot preview!)

Truth be told, I’m a total slacker of a blogger as of late.  For those who don’t know, I recently launched a hilarious (if I do say so myself) new website called AnnoyingAtTheGym.com and guys, finding those hilarious photos take some serious work.  I somehow let it slip through the cracks that back in October I got to visit the famous Warren-Tricomi salon in West Hollywood and I’m not quite sure how this happened, in all honesty.  It’s probably what I like to call “balayage shock” because as you’ve read before, I have an almost unhealthy obsession with my hair color and I discovered that THEY DO BALAYAGE AT WARREN-TRICOMI LOS ANGELES.  It requires all caps because, believe it or not, this quite rare on the left coast.  My girl in New York introduced me to balayage and I’ve been hooked ever since I realized that it’s beneficial for the following reasons: (and yes, I’m using bullet points cause that’s how serious I am about this)

  • They allow for “freehand highlighting.”  With foil highlights, you take four or five inch sections of hair at a time and sometimes you wind up overhighlighting your hair because of the large surface area.  Balayage allows for more strategic color application since the stylist paints pretty much wherever they think you need it.
  • No foils = less brassiness.  Brassy blonde hair is the devil, according to me.  Foil conducts heat and processes hair faster and more aggressively, which is one of the main causes of that gross orange color that happens to me.

But I digress.  My appointment was originally with Kaz Amor who I was desparate to see after talking to Nadine Jolie about who did her hair such an amazing shade.  I met with Kaz and he took at look at my hair…he immediately said “you know what?  Have you ever tried balayage?”  It was like he could read my mind.  I pretty much gave up on even asking stylists in LA if they did it…so I was pretty much speechless when Kaz said, “I would love to do your hair but I really think balayage would be the best thing for you…and I have someone else here who does it REALLY well.”  SOLD.

And the result?  Well I recently had head shots taken.  OK, you can laugh.  Please feel free to comment “ooooh my god.  Jamie you are SO LA now.”  Yes, ladies, I now have head shots.  But you know what?  My hair color looks damn good…so say what you will about selling out, but you can’t knock the hair.

P.S. – this photo is un-touched…I’m still waiting on the photoshopped version where you will most likely confuse me for Heidi Klum.  Stay tuned.

The Hair Files: Fred Segal Salon

Welcome to another episode of the hair files.  I got my latest color and highlights done at Santa Monica’s famous Fred Segal Salon and I have to say, I’m pretty into it!  If you read my blog, you KNOW how picky I am with my color and I definitely don’t let just anyone touch it so when I was offered the chance to one, try out such an awesome salon and two, get my highlights done by the owner, Matthew Preece, I jumped at the opportunity. Matthew has devoted clientele that includes LeAnn Rimes, Brooke Burke, Jamie Pressley and even Tony Robbins so I knew that I’d be in excellent hands.

I wanted to go a bit lighter (shocker) and after Matthew suggested that he first lighten my base, I definitely got a little nervous since my hair sometimes turns a bit red at the base if done incorrectly; but Matthew assured me it would look awesome…and he was RIGHT. He lightened my base just the right amount and then put even lighter highlights over the base color to lighten up the hair around my face.  The verdict?  Happy.

Gavert Atelier Salon

If you read my blog, you know how much I love to try all of the best salons in Los Angeles and Gavert Atelier in Beverly Hills is no exception.  I was kind of sick of the darker blonde I’d been sporting so I decided to go back to my lighter shade, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.  The service at Gavert Atelier was exceptional and the colorist really listed to what I wanted to change, which is always appreciated and, believe it or not, sometimes rare in a colorist.  So I’m back to lighter blonde for now but we’ll see what happens in another month or so 😉

Birthday highlights and a Head Refresher

So I got my highlights touched up the other day at Nelson J Salon in Beverly Hills.  The color?  Amazing.  What’s even better is that they use Aveda’s specal dye that is bleach-free and 97% natural…I mean, I’ve been really into the whole “natural” thing lately and I have to say, I’m very happy with the results.  Nelson Chan, the owner, was extremely nice and even took the time to show me how to use hot rolllers which, ironically, I’ve never used.  Hot rollers are a lot better for your hair, and especially if you have extensions, like I do at the moment.

If you’re in the LA area, I definitely say stop into Nelson J and ask for the Head Refresher, which is what originally caught my eye at this salon. This unique service includes Aveda’s 99% natural hair gloss, a relaxing rosemary and mint-oil scalp and head massage, along with a signature Nelson J blow out.
“This Aveda hair gloss is wonderful because it makes hair very shiny and also refreshes hair color for up to two months,” Chan says.  “Plus clients get into a state of bliss with the Aveda rosemary and mint-oil applied to their scalp combined with the relaxing head massage.”

Good news- the Head Refresher is on sale now until April 1st for only $49!  It usually goes for $100.  🙂

The Neil George Salon

So I’ve blogged time and time again about how I am on the constant quest to achieve the perfect blonde highlights…well, I may have found them at the Neil George Salon.  I was lucky enough to have the brilliant Amanda George take a whirl at making my hair as golden as possible, with out it falling out, obviously.  I had a 10:30AM appointment on a Saturday and when I walked in, the place was packed.  “Who goes to the salon at the crack of dawn on a Saturday,” I thought.  Well, I suppose 10:30 isn’t the actual crack of dawn…and then when I saw how amazing the staff was, I totally understood.  The Beverly Hills salon services many of Hollywood’s celebs and was created by the British duo, Amanda George and Neil Weisberg.  After Amanda gave me brilliant highlights, Neil cut my hair in that way that only a real professional does- he looked at my hair, ruffled it around a bit and just began cutting instinctually.  I love watching genius in action and I especially love watching someone do what they love, which Amanda and Neil both obviously do.

It’s been about a month since my appointment and the color and cut still look amazing.  Very impressed over here, ladies.
