Holiday hair and makeup “rules”

This post is sponsored by Target but all products were selected and reviewed by me. All opinions are my own, as per usual.

Because sometimes it’s fun to break your usual “rules” during the holiday season…

I usually stick to a pretty minimal hair-and-makeup routine. I’m a girl who really just likes to wear the basics (foundation, lip gloss, mascara, etc.), so you might say that I play by “the rules” pretty much every day, which, let’s be honest, is kind of boring when it comes to all the parties that the holiday season brings along. I visited the Target Beauty Concierge again (last post here) to see how I could EASILY try something new—i.e. break the rules—with a few simple products that don’t require a lot of work…something none of us have time for during this busy month.

For starters, I’m wearing Almay Smart Shade Skin Tone Matching SPF 15 foundation in Light, which I love because it uses patented technology to actually match your skin—that means no more spot testing needed before you buy. I also tried CoverGirl’s awesome new Super Sizer mascara (above), and it’s perfect for both playing by AND breaking the rules. 🙂

Playing by the rules:

My Beauty Concierge recommended getting an eye shadow palette that could serve for both playing by the rules AND breaking the rules, since it has a great everyday neutral and some bold, sparkly colors for a great smoky eye. For my playing-by-the-rules eye, I used the neutral peachy-brown from the NYX Cosmetics Smokey Eye Shadow Palette, which is pretty much eye shadow palette perfection.

For my lips, I used a pop of subtle reddish-pink, which is great because you still get the color but it’s not SO in-your-face. The L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Balm Pop in Electric Pink is one of my favorites because it gives you a fun pop of subtle color, but also keeps your lips hydrated.

For playing-by-the-rules hair, I love a good mousse (a.k.a. “volumizing soufflé”). My Beauty Concierge RAVED about this version from Herbal Essences. The Naked collection is a favorite of mine, so I was pretty confident that I’d also like the Volumizing Soufflé for tons of touchable volume. I love that it has scents of grapefruit and mint (yum) and the height lasts ALL day, for real.

Breaking the rules:

So when it comes to breaking the rules, my Beauty Concierge recommended that I simply add on to what I already do, which is brilliant. I added in some super chic shimmer with L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator, which is one of the best highlighters to illuminate peach and yellow skin tones. You can use this stuff as a highlighter like I did or alone for just some subtle glow.

For my breaking-the-rules eye, I used the black sparkly eye shadow shade from the same NYX palette to do a fun, smoky eye.

As a fun way to break my usual rules, my Beauty Concierge suggested that I do an unexpected or unusual lip for myself. I have to admit, I kind of LOVE the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Addis Ababa. I NEVER wear bright colors like this, and wearing a bold lip with a smoky eye is definitely breaking the rules. LOVE.

And, finally, when it comes to hair, my Beauty Concierge and I decided to add even MORE volume than usual, so I tried out Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo, which I applied to my roots and ALL OVER for the best volume ever.
