Inspired By: The Ocean

Inspried by the ocean

For someone who lives in Los Angeles, I really do NOT spend enough time in the ocean, and yeah, I’m hoping that will change this summer.  In the meantime, here are some awesome ocean-inspired beauty products that I adore.

Deborah Lippmann “Mermaid’s Dream” nail polish: I’m pretty much obsessed with this color and plan on wearing it all summer.  I’m a sucker for anything mermaid-related. Fact.

Aqualillies for Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Eye and Cheek Palette: I love anything Tarte but this palette definitely takes the cake.  It’s a great combo of neutral eye colors, mixed with brights for your cheeks.

SachaJuan Ocean Mist: Summer in a BOTTLE.  That’s really all that I have to say.

AHAVA Dead Sea Salt Bath Salt: I still have dreams that one day I might be able to swim in the Dead Sea (thanks for nothing, Birthright! lol) But right now, I’m happy settling for this bath salt product, straight for the ocean I want to swim in.

Kiehl’s Cryste Marine Ultra Riche Lifting and Firming Cream: My oh my, Kiehl’s…clearly I was excited to try this because, get this, the cryste marine flower grows on rock formations aside the Mediterranean Sea and is known for its unique ability to boost cell renewal for a supple skin effect.

Bumble & Bumble Seaweed Shampoo: I love the look and feel of this mild, moisturizing, daily shampoo that has marine extracts that feed roots, adds shine and keeps scalps happy.

Tone Ocean Therapy Deep Sea Extracts & Pearl Extracts Body Wash: This is literally the ocean, only cleaner and more fun to wash with.  It’s got pearl extract, sea kelp and vitamin E, all great for the skin…mermaids everywhere are totally jealous.

The Best Hostess Gifts

the best hostess gifts

It’s kind of a weird feeling when you start to realize that a LOT of your friends are moving in with their significant others, getting engaged and buying houses, which is why I decided to stock up on a few items that everyone will love – here are my top five picks for the best hostess/host gifts.  These gifts are guaranteed to be loved by anyone, I promise.

1. Diptyque votive candle trio: As you already know, I’m obsessed with Diptyque candles and, in fact, I featured this trio in my holiday gift guide as well.  What I love about this trio, as opposed to buying just one candle, is that the hostess can then try three different scents and even burn them in three different rooms.  This is an AMAZING gift, guys.  (hint, hint).

2. Anthropologie DIY friendship bracelet kit: Obviously this gift is best for a woman but let me tell you, it’s a winner.  Even if your friend isn’t super into DIY, this kit is really easy and fun to use.

3. Fortune cookie box: I love this.  It’s chic and quirky and you can even add in your own fortune, custom for the hostess/host.

4. Black Hawaiian sea salt: Fancy salts are very grown up, that’s a fact.  My friend Jen bought me a little jar of black truffle salt for my 30th this year and it was honestly one of my favorite gifts.

5. Tokyo Milk octopus bubble bath: Clearly I always default to giving beauty products as gifts, duh, but when presenting for a hostess, presentation is key.  The octopus bubble bath packaging is not only amazing, but the design is chic and fun.

The Monday Rundown: the natural greens addition

the monday rundown

I’ve been noticing a “natural” greens trend happening for me, as of late.  Sure, they’re obviously really good for your health and body, but I’m starting to pay attention to grass-patterned accessories and beauty products as well, it’s a sickness.  Here are my faves of the moment:

1. Kale chips: I stumbled upon this super easy recipe on Refinery29 and became instantly obsessed.

2. Windowsill herb planter kit: I’ve been trying to grow something (anything, really) on my balcony for three years now…and it hasn’t been very successful.  I’m thinking an herb garden might be more up my alley.

3. Sephora + PANTONE UNIVESE glitter false eyelashes: I really love the subtle green glitter line at the base of these falsies, and, girls, they’re not just for St. Patrick’s Day.

4. Kate Spade “play the field” clutch: Good advice for dating but even cuter on a clutch…with actual grass on it.

Spring Break: Then & Now

Spring Break - then and now

It hit me yesterday that I haven’t been on spring break since 2005, and, quite frankly, this makes me sad.  Not to say that I haven’t been on other fun vacations since then, but there’s something so exciting and also disgusting, in a good way, about the college tradition known as “spring break.”  This got me to thinking about how much I’ve changed over the past eight years, and in many, many good ways.  For example, not that there’s anything wrong with a little Bud Light but hey, I now prefer a nice glass of wine or a delicious cocktail.  But tanning oil?  Hell no.  I don’t care if it does have SPF 15, it’s still TANNING OIL.  I’ll take my Shiseido SPF 50+, please.  I mean.  Let’s not even discuss wedge flip flops…and ladies, you can stop laughing out loud now cause I know you wore them too.  I now prefer these Loeffler Randall woven sandals, which are perfect for day to night.  What are some of the things you’ve grown out of?

P.S. check out my instagram HERE if you want to see a picture of me on spring break 2005, to which I caption “can you smell the sun damage?”

Coachella Beauty Tips

690x517

Aaaah, Coachella.  Let me tell you, I always get a serious case of FOMO (fear or missing out) when this time of year rolls around, except for the two years that I actually went.  But then, I remember how awesome this city is when totally empty.  I’m actually really pumped for a traffic-free LA weekend…but hey, if you ARE heading to Indio, check out my tips, and tips from other lovelies like NadineJolie, PennyChic and SydneStyle before you get in your car and head to the 5.

Own Products Crazy Awesome Aging App

own skincare

You know I love me some serious skincare, which is exactly why Own products totally fascinate me.  The line is a natural skin care collection that uses CLA, a derivative of the safflower plant, to fight all three causes of aging in all three layers of the skin.  In clinical studies, CLA is proven to be as effective as retinol – without the harmful side effects.  Oh, and get this, they have a crazy awesome App, My Own, which uses facial-recognition technology to track 50 points on the face and analyzes a photograph of the user.  The app then provides a clinical evaluation of the major signs of aging, along with nutrition, wellness and beauty recommendations based on individual aging results.  What’s the secret?  The app assesses signs of aging by configuring the number of fine lines, deep-set wrinkles, percentage of pigment and number of age spots. Those numbers are then compared to others in a similar age group.

Upon the evaluation, you’ll receive a side-by-side comparison of the current submitted photo and a photo of what you could look like after following a recommended skin care and wellness regimen. There’s also a tracking tool, which lets you see how your complexion changes over time, motivating you to keep up the recommended skin care and wellness regimen. Own also encourages lifestyle modification tips, like sleeping on silk pillowcases to forestall wrinkles and eating potassium-rich foods to decrease pigmentation.  It’s just weird science, if you ask me, but I’m into it.
