Reader Question: How do I get rid of hormonal acne?

Hi Jamie,

Lately I’ve had the WORST hormonal acne and I don’t know how to get rid of it. Any tips?

Thanks!

Hi L,

Adult acne (hormonal or cystic) is always awful.  The good news is that hormonal acne (in most cases) is fairly easy to treat. Here’s what I think works best.

I. Make sure you do, in fact, have hormonal acne. I always suggest a visit to your dermatologist (or regular doctor if you don’t have access to a derm) to make sure that you do actually have hormonal acne and not other type of acne .

II. Try a topical solution with ingredients like salicylic acid or sulfur. I’ve blogged about a ton of my favorite spot treating products, but here are a few of my go-tos that 100% will help.

III. Conceal your breakouts. While you DO have those breakouts, use a concealer you love to hide them. Trust me, stressing about the breakouts only makes it worse.

IV. Try birth control, if all else fails. If you’ve tried topical products and they aren’t working well for you, see your gyno and see if they can write you a birth control prescription- the pill is a sure fire way to balance those hormones and reduce breakouts.

Xo,

Jamie
