Because, even if you have thick hair, your scalp can easily burn…
I’ve talked endlessly about how I have thin hair, but one thing I’ve only touched on a few times is how many times my scalp has been sunburned! My first memory of scalp burn happened my junior year of high school; I had wispy bangs…it was a rough moment in time for me. I went to an outdoor concert with my friend Natasha. Two days later, the skin between my bangs and my hairline was totally burned and blistered. Turns out, I had legit sun poisoning and it was AWFUL. I won’t get too graphic but I will tell you that oozing did happen, and it happened IN school. So fun!
After that moment I become super aware of the fact that, hello, even if you have hair if you have a part line (anywhere) that is skin being exposed to UVA and UVB rays.
Funny enough, it’s been a little tough finding hair products that have actual SPF and not just “heat protecting” ingredients, which really protect your hair from heat styling tools and not the actual SUN. Over the past few years, I’ve tested pretty much every hair/scalp SPF on the market (the few that exist) and these are hands-down my favorite.
It may sound silly but, trust me, the last thing you want to deal with is oozing blisters or, even worse, skin cancer of the scalp. It’s actually extra terrifying because scalp skin cancer can easily go overlooked since your hair is likely covering most of your scalp.
What do you guys think? Have I sold you on SPF for your scalp?
Faves:
Banana Boat Quick Dry Scalp Spray SPF 30:
This one was admittedly hard to find. I ended up buying it online on Jet.com because I couldn’t find it in any drugstore or Target! I love this spray because it’s clear, non-greasy, and dries super fast. Plus it’s water-resistant for up to 80 minutes so it’s great if you’re going in the water. Love. Oh, and side note- it’s also recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
COOLA Organic Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30:
If you want a great organic version, COOLA is always a good option. This antioxidant-rich, multi-benefit scalp and hair mist that protects from heat, UV rays, and color fading. It’s basically a three-in-one, which is amazing. Admittedly, the first time I tried this spray I did one too many spritzes and my was a tad bit sticky. Start with just one or two sprays and see how you do- don’t go crazy like I did, ha.
Colorescience sunforgettable Broad Spectrum SPF 50:
This one has been one my holy grail beauty products for YEARS. I keep it in the car, my purse and in my bathroom so I can apply it any time I know my scalp is gonna be exposed to direct sunlight. It’s mineral-based, totally invisible and even protects you from pollution, blue light and infrared radiation in addition to UVA/UVB protection! This one is an absolute MUST, especially if you have oily hair since it’s powder-based and won’t weight down your locks.
