The Gilded Eye

hannah

I have a confession to make.  I, Hannah Cranston, am a gold digger.

No, it’s not what you’re thinking—I’m not that kind of gold digger (although it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for my barren wallet), but I AM a self-professed beauty gold digger.

As a #beautynewbie, I cannot just settle for any old make-up trend.  I’m on the prowl for the biggest and best trends and products to add to my beauty arsenal.  And this week, I struck gold…literally.

From The Grammys to NYFW to the Oscars, the gilded eye has become the golden rule for rocking one of the hottest beauty trends of 2014.  I was absolutely inspired by AMY ADAMS at the Oscars…this look is almost as good as when she got up to dance with Pharrell, btw.

Naturally, I couldn’t pass up being a part of this cosmetics gold rush, so I decided to jump on board and get my glitter on.

I first covered my eyelid in URBAN DECAY EYESHADOW PRIMER POTION IN SIN.  I then used STILA BAKED EYESHADOW TRIO CHAMPAGNE on my outer eyelids to give my gilded eye a smoky effect.  To cover my inner eyelid, I used L’OREAL PARIS INFALLIBLE EYE SHADOW IN BRONZED TAUPE to really start bringing the gold into the equation.  Finally, shiz got real when I used URBAN DECAY HEAVY METAL GLITTER EYELINER IN MIDNIGHT COWBOY to line my eye.  Let me just tell you, this product is definitely worth its weight in gold; the brush is easy to use and provides major glam.

I feel as good as gold (had to get one last “gold” pun in there).

How to wear white eyeliner

kenzo-beauty-spring-summer-2014-pfw122

Fact: I have blogged about white eyeliner in THIS POST from 2008 (yep, 2008) and again last week but it was just a few days ago that I re-read the January issue of Allure only to see, what? WHITE EYELINER at the KENZO Spring Summer 2014 show at PARIS FASHION WEEK.  Apparently I was way ahead of the curve (right where I like it) and predicted not only the future, but the fashionable future. I digress.  Maybe it’s time to try white eyeliner again? What do you guys think?

I’ve already raved about the Wet ‘N Wild version, but here are a few other alternatives to get the white eyeliner look:

Obsessed: Sleek Makeup i Divine eye palette

The sucker for packaging is taken to a whole new level when it comes to this Sleek Makeup i Divine eye palette.  The waffle pattern reminds me of my thermal pajamas as a kid, and that’s a good thing, gotta say.  The colors are super pigmented and I really love all of the shimmery pinks and taupe colors- they’re perfect for an everyday eye (hello, similar to Stila’s Kitten shadow), and then there’s that whacky bright blue for when you wanna get a little weird.

how to get dark nail polish off your nails!

nail polish tips

I will never forget the moment when a guy said to me “what are you goth now?  Why are you wearing black nail polish?”

The answer?  It was 2006…and CHANEL “black satin” was all the rage.  I mean, sure, mine was totally the Wet n’ Wild version (cause I’m cheap and lazy) but still…black nails were SO HAUTE that he didn’t even know it.  The problem is this: when you wear black (or really any dark nail polish color) it gets stuck in the corners of your nails.  For real.  I thought it was just me, cause I’m sloppy, but turns out…it’s everyone.  Here’s a trick that I recently picked up from a manicurist:

Use an old makeup brush, dipped in nail polish remover, to scrub off the remnants of your dark polish!  I’m liking Stila Double Ended Smudge Brush #28 since you get TWO choices: one is flat and short, and the other is long and thin…making it easy to get into every nook and dark polish cranny.
