new blog alert: BeautySweetSpot.com

So last night I attended a fab launch event for an amazing new beauty blog, BeautySweetSpot.com. The event was held at the Townhouse Spa and I have to say, I was VERY impressed! The event offered delish cherry-themed cocktails, a chocolate fondue fountain and, of course, hot waiters serving up other goodies. Beauty services were offered as well! I got my hair blown out for a “sexy summer beach waves” look and also received a very needed 10 minute back massage…gotta love working in the beauty industry. 😉

Make sure you check out Jeannine’s blog- LOVE her.

Sunsilk Captivating Curls Gel & Cream Twist

So with all this rain, I’ve been trying to style my hair differently than my usual straight hair with straight bangs. Since my hair is naturally wavy, I decided to try out Sunsilk Captivating Curls Gel & Cream Twist. I love the idea of combining gel and cream together because I think a lot of people often don’t know which is best for their specific hair. The verdict? A fab (and super affordable) product that gives you soft, well-defined curls. Perfect for rainy weather! The gel provides a strong hold and the cream gives you the soft feel so your hair doesn’t look crunchy. Approved.

Mascara Monday: Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara

So Mascara Monday, part V. I know I’ve said it for the past four weeks, but I’m looooving Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara. I was recently introduced to Kiehl’s as a line and I’m mildly obsessed…but don’t worry, my new found love for Kiehl’s hasn’t intruded on my mascara review judgment!

This mascara is enriched with mineral pigments for rich color and combines volumizing Acacia Senegal with conditioning Jojoba Oil and Aloe Vera, the unique formula gives lashes natural-looking length, volume and rich, glossy color. I also love that it’s paraban-free…always a good thing. Approved.

Dr. Lee Gause on teeth whitening

So I recently had the opportunity to ask Dr. Lee Gause, DDS, a few questions about teeth whitening. Personally, I’ve always wanted to do it but I had a few questions…here they are:

Since many girls in their 20s would love to whiten their teeth but can’t afford it, what are the options from top price to bottom? What are some of your favorite over-the-counter whitening products?

Although, the most effective whitening is an in-office whitening treatment, some over-the-counter whitening treatments are relatively effective. If a patient simply needs to whiten their teeth only a few shades, Crest White Strips and Listerine Whitening Rinse are two good over the counter products. However, Listerine will take about a month to see any real results and will only get your teeth about a third as white as an in-office whitening. Crest White Strips get teeth a little whiter, but can cause uneven whitening known as “checker boarding.”

It’s also important to note that OTC products will not whiten veneers so drug store kits are a waste of money for people with such dental work. Overall, OTC whitening products are inexpensive and can be a great option for those with good oral hygiene who want to whiten their natural teeth slightly.

Although a little more pricey (about $500), an in-office whitening treatment is the most effective option. By having a trained professional evaluate a patient’s situation, the dentist can also recommend other options. For example, tea stain can often be removed with a good cleaning using a prophy jet (air abrasion that polishes the tooth’s surface).

What are your tips for keeping teeth super white?

A great option is have whitening trays made. This allows you to whiten your teeth for a few days after your normal dental cleaning and many patients see successful results. Also, it is smart to avoid things that stain teeth such as smoking, coffee and tea.

What’s the most common cause of stained teeth for women in their 20s?

Common causes of stained teeth of women in their 20s include smoking, consuming heavily dyed foods and drinking dark-colored beverages such as coffee, tea, soda and red wine.

What’s the difference between teeth whitening and teeth bleaching?

Bleaching is slang for teeth whitening; however, no bleach is used. The whitening agent is actually a peroxide based compound.

For someone who wants to go “green” is there a good eco friendly product that you would recommend?

Peroxide is an eco-friendly biodegradable compound and the in-office procedure such as ZOOM uses a whitening light that is reusable. Dentistry as a whole has made a concerted effort to clean up its act. In the past, dentists used to flood the waterlines with Mercury-containing-water from silver fillings, and now, most dentists do not utilize mercury as a cavity-filler. In addition, it is now a law that dentists have to separate the silver from the water if they do opt to fill cavities with silver.

How.Sick.Is.This: Josie Maran Bear Naked Wipes (for the polar bears!)

So when model Josie Maran founded her organic, natural cosmetics line, she sought to develop eco-friendly products and biodegradable packaging that were safe and healthy for the body and the earth. In creating her new Bear Naked Wipes, Josie took her dedication to the environment to a new level by pledging to donate 1% of proceeds to the Natural Resource Defense Council’s (NRDC) Polar Bear SOS initiative, a campaign committed to saving polar bears and their habitats.

As a result of global warming, the ice is disappearing from under polar bears’ paws. No ice means nowhere to live, and polar bears could become extinct as a result. “The fact that global warming could kill off two-thirds of the world’s polar bears by 2050 is devastating,” says Josie. “It saddens me to think that during my daughter’s and my lifetime, the polar bear species could be completely wiped out. Donating a portion of sales to support the NRDC in their fight to protect these beautiful creatures is the least I can do. I want to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved in protecting our natural resources.”

Created with all-natural ingredients, Bear Naked Wipes are biodegradable, making them an earth-friendly way to wipe your skin clean. A natural blend of aloe vera, chamomile, cucumber and Vitamin E soothes skin as it whisks away dirt and makeup. Josie Maran’s Bear Naked Wipes are luxuriously soft and gentle on sensitive eyes and skin.

Designer tattoo parlors? Yes, please.

So I’ve been wanting a second tattoo for quite some time now but for one reason or another, haven’t gotten it yet. A few months back, I went with my friend Mia to get her second tattoo and I was going to get mine then but I completely changed my mind. I don’t want to say that I “chickened out” but it was more of a bad vibe. Her tattoo turned out AMAZING but the woman that did it was a complete and utter bitch for no reason at all. Plus, she was completely filthy. Like, it looked like she hadn’t washed her hair in a week…and not in a “I’m using dry shampoo but taking body showers” kind of way. Anyway, I got bad vibes from her and decided against getting my second tatt on St. Mark’s. I recently came across this blog post from W magazine’s site…a great article written by Jamie Rosen. I’m totally intrigued, and kind of surprised, that this is the first I’ve heard of a “designer” tattoo parlor. Very Upper East Side. Very New York City girl. I’m loving it. The tattoo I want is pretty friggin small…though, I’m certainly not going to turn down a Vicodin OR a glass of chardonnay to help make the experience better. I’ve loved the idea of getting a white tatoo since I saw Lindsay Lohan’s “breathe” wrist tattoo. I’ve got some thinking to do now…stay tuned.
