Guest Post: Kenra Platinum Straightening Gelee

My friend/co-worker Melissa is definitely not your typical beauty girl, which is exactly why I wanted her to write a beauty product review on my blog.  I’m obsessed with her new super shiny, glossy locks…check out her thoughts below.  And side note, apparently this post is her face’s internet debut!

If you knew me in real life, you might be surprised to read this–a known Star Wars geek (wow, is that the first time anyone has said Star Wars on this blog???), {editor’s note: YES} book-worm, stranger to fashion and beauty n00b, I have no right reviewing a hair product such as the Kenra Platinum Straightening Gelee…but no matter how much I may pretend I don’t care about how I look, I so do. #confessions

While I usually try to politely dismiss Jamie’s beauty advice, which she generously shares with me over the cubicle wall, I find her knowledge is often valuable when it comes to my skincare and hair care. That’s why when she popped over the invisible threshold to my professional sanctuary with a large silver tube touting “align & shine!” I gratefully took the bottle and excitedly rushed home to find out what the hell a hair gelee is.

Curious? it’s awesome.

The directions are simple: apply evenly throughout damp hair and blow-dry straight in sections using a round brush. So nothing astray from my usual upkeep. What was drastically different, however, were the results. Not only was I met with a handful of compliments at my hair’s glassy shine, but my tresses managed to maintain their glossy finish through a foggy weekend in San Francisco–Best thing yet…NO FRIZZ!

If you have super-curly hair, like me, you are probably used to using multiple products to keep your frizz at bay–and you also know that a humid day can be the stuff of nightmares. I’ve resorted to hoods and hats, hairspray, or paste to keep the moisture-induced volume from transforming into medusa-esque serpentine strands—DON’T LOOK! After using this product, I didn’t require any of that. My hair glistened and stayed put. – Melissa Pardo

Summer Helpers

I love a nice lazy summer.  For me, summer is all about relaxation, the beach and not caring as much about the little things (e.g. brown roots, slightly dirty hair and uncomfortable shoes).  Here are three of my summer helper secrets:

Foot Petals: I’m obsessed with this life-saving product.  It can take shoes that normally destroy your feet to shoes that are actually comfortable.  They’re a miracle.

Rita Hazan Root Concealer for Highlights: My hair grows like a weed which makes getting my highlights touched up both annoying AND expensive.  This root concealer, made especially for highlights is great for helping me to get that extra week (or two!) before going back to the salon.

KENRA Platinum Dry Shampoo: I’m a big dry shampoo advocate and the KENRA version is pretty great.  I especially love that it has a UV defense duo, which helps protect against color fade.

The Private Room Beverly Hills

I’m constantly trying new colorists but it’s very rare that I find one that honestly impresses me.  I had a full head of highlights done at The Private Room a few weeks ago and guys, I was truly impressed.  Tina, the founder, gave me the straight talk that yes, she would give me the icy blonde shade that I wanted but only if I promised to lay off the flat iron.  I mean, I get it, but it’s HARD.  If I was able to get my hair blown out every day, no problem, but I can’t. I have to blow dry my own hair and yeah…I’m not very good at it.  SO the flat iron helps out.

I decided to give it up, in exchange for the icy blonde shade that I covet…and so far, so good.  Tina is a straight shooter, which I love, and she could even tell that I take iron supplements just by the way my color processed.  SO crazy.  I am totally going back.

The Top 5 Hair Products Every Woman Should Own, According to Edward Tricomi

I’m all about simplifying my hair routine, escpecially during the summer months.  Here, Edward Tricomi, hair master and co-owner of Warren Tricomi salons, gives his five must-have products that every woman should own…and I totally, 100% agree.

Must-Have #1: QUALITY SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

“Think of your shampoo and conditioner as the prep work before you style. Spending a little extra for quality is well worth the splurge.”

Must-Have #2: HAIRSPRAY

“My number one must-have. You want your style to have hold but still move and be touchable. Shu Uemura makes a great one, you can layer it depending on the amount of hold you need.”

Must-Have #3: BLOW DRY LOTION

“You need to use frizz-fighting product while the hair is still wet. A blow dry lotion provides humidity resistance, frizz-control and protects hair from heat styling, which is so important.”

Must-Have #4: DRY SHAMPOO

“Great for when you want to breathe life back into your style. Sexy, wavy styles will stay voluminous and blowouts will last longer. No need to worry about them falling flat.”

Must-Have #5: HAIR GLAZE

“Takes out the dullness. Gives beautiful shine and depth. Depending on your hair texture you can use it daily or as a weekly treatment.  If hair is super fine, don’t use it more than once a week.”

Heidi Klum Announced As the Spokesperson for CLEAR SCALP & HAIR BEAUTY THERAPY

A few weeks ago I got a really fun package in the mail.  I opened it up and it played music and told me that I was going to have the best night ever.  That’s a bold statement for me these days.  Bold statement aside, I’m always up for a good hair challenge!  As all of my loyal readers know, I’m very into hair and scalp health which is what, naturally, peaked my interest in the brand spanking new hair care line, CLEAR SCALP & HAIR BEAUTY THERAPY.

After trying out the product, which I loved, I found out that superfreak (this is what I call women who look 20 years younger than they actually are) Heidi Klum is their first spokesperson!  I LOVE, love, love Heidi Klum.  Not only is she amazingly gorgeous but she’s also an amazing business woman.  Heidi agrees with me as she mentions that she appreciates the fact that this product “feeds” the scalp, not just the ends, and gives women stronger, more beautiful hair in just seven days.  Seven days is a BOLD claim, guys…and believe me, I’m still putting it to the honest test.  If you think about it, it makes total sense – the same way that the best way to get the perfect makeup look is by having GOOD SKIN.  The base of anything is what’s most important and, according to the brand studies, 99% of hair’s natural strength and beauty comes from the scalp, the foundation for strong, beautiful hair.  LOVE THAT.

One Bag & Three Beauty Obsessions

I haven’t done One Bag & Three Beauty Obsessions in awhile, BUT it’s back.

Bag:

Beauty:

  • Narciso Rodriguez for Her: My perfume staple since college, this fragrance is a winner EVERY time.  The men love it. Trust.
  • Kate Somerville Exofilate Body Intensive Exofoliating Treatment: An intensive exfoliating treatment on my face?  Absolutely not.  On my body?  Yes, it’s a different ball game.  I love a good body slough and this stuff does it’s job.
  • Bumble & Bumble Prep: Lately I’ve been all about the prep.  I’ve been using a makeup primer and now, I’m also into the hair styling prep.  Bumble & Bumble’s products are fantastic so I wasn’t surprised when I started using and loving this prep product.
