Remembering an Icon: Joan Rivers (and why I skipped Fashion Week)

joan rivers

I remember watching Joan Rivers on the red carpet from a very early age and, of course, thinking she was the funniest and most honest woman on the planet.

In honor of Joan, a ground-breaking icon in not only the fashion world but also the comedy space, I’m gonna make a confession.  I try to keep my blog as upbeat as possible because, let’s be real here, everyone deals with their own sh*t day-in and day-out, and nobody wants to read about someone else’s heartbreak or life drama;  Sure, there’s a place for that on some blogs, but not on this blog.  You (and me, as well) want to read about things that inspire you, things that will motivate you, and things that will encourage you to be the best YOU that you can be. That’s real and there is nothing wrong with it.

“I succeeded by saying what everyone else is thinking.” – Joan Rivers

I’m sitting on a plane right now, flying back to LA after a six-day family visit in New York, which just-so-happened to be during New York Fashion Week…which I guiltlessly avoided…like the plague.  Part of me knows on some level that it would’ve been good for me to make a little time to go to a few fashion week events but, quite simply, I just didn’t want to.

I didn’t plan on blogging about my lack of NYFW enthusiasm but after reading so many online dedications to Joan Rivers after her death I was kind of excited to put my true feelings out there…fashion week is fun but spending time with my family will ALWAYS be MORE FUN.

I put my nephew on the bus for his third day of kindergarten.  My dad and I ate stuffed artichoke at one of our favorite 40-year-old Italian restaurants in Long Island.  I got to (finally) meet my best friend’s newborn baby boy.  I celebrated my mom’s 60th birthday and we also discussed how she’s going to renovate one of her old sheds into a shelter for stray cats.  Ok, that last one REALLY got me excited because we all know I’m a crazy cat lady, but I digress because clearly the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  Oh, and did I mention my mom’s new house has an APPLE ORCHARD? I felt like I was on the set of The Walking Dead,  but in a good way…if that makes any sense at all?

Ramblings aside, Joan Rivers has always inspired me from an honesty perspective and that’s what this blog is all about: honest beauty and lifestyle reviews, tips, tricks, etc. and the occasional rant (like this one) about real life problems and, what I like to call, a solid reality check.  Nobody is happy all the time but life is all about making decisions that are best for you and, in this case, I’m not sorry one bit that I skipped NYFW for some quality time with my family.

“I think anyone who’s perfectly happy isn’t particularly funny.” – Joan Rivers

Additional reading (and giggles): Joan’s funeral wishes that definitely gave her the last laugh.
