5 Things I Love Right Now

5 things i love right now-2

1. Michael Popp #Poppaganada shirt: You may have read my post back in December where I mentioned a long-time friend was diagnosed with cancer.  Well, I’m happy to report that while he’s not completely out of the woods, he IS doing well.  He’s selling these rad shirts to help with the cost of his recent battle with leukemia and his even more recent bone marrow transplant.

2. La Fresh Nail Polish Remover Acetone-Free Pads: Every time I’m traveling, I always seem to notice that my nails look absolutely awful; it’s like kind of comedic at this point.  With that said, I got SUPER excited when I discovered these little travel pack nail polish remover pads!  I mean, I’m just going to leave them in my “to-go bag.”  Done.

3. Clinique A Different Nail Enamel For Sensitive Skin in “Yellow Genius”: I blogged about the Clinique nail polish line before but I’m really into this limited-edition shade, inspired by Clinique’s original “yellow genius,” its famous moisturizer.

4. Stella and Bow “As If” bracelet: I don’t need to explain my Clueless obsession, or why I love this bracelet.  End of story.

5. NUANCE Salma Hayek Lasting Wear Gel Eyeliner: I have a rough time finding an eyeliner that doesn’t run down my face, true story.  However, I recently tried this gel version from NUANCE Salma Hayek and I LOVE it.  It’s awesome.

Reader Question: How do I simplify my skincare regimen?

Simplify your skincare regimen

One of the most common reader questions that I get is on the topic of simplifying your skincare regimen. What do you REALLY need to use? How often?  In what order?  When?  These are all completely valid questions, especially given the fact that beauty brands come out with dozens of new products every year.  And, here’s a secret, a lot of the “new” products are really just the same formula with a new name and new product packaging!  It’s true.  So here, I break down exactly what you need: a simple skincare regimen with the fewest products possible.  Of course, you can always add treatments (based on your specific concerns) into your regimen but this list is the bare necessities, and a few product recommendations.  I’ve included high-end brands and drugstore brands, so you can decide where you want to splurge.

VIDEO: Under 5 Minute Makeup Routine

Here’s a weird fact: I really only started wearing makeup toward the end of college.  Ok, with the exception that I did, occasionally  wear the super classy white eyeliner on my eyelids during high school.  Oh yeah, I did that.  So sure…now that I actually DO have to wear makeup, my routine is usually under five minutes…mostly because I’m lazy and always running late.  In this video, I show you my not-so-secret under five minute routine (FOUR minutes, to be exact!) that will give you the bare minimum as far as coverage, and not looking like a beast.

In the video:

COVERGIRL and Olay Simply Ageless Serum

Clinique Even Better Foundation SPF 15

Urban Decay Naked Palette

Urban Decay 24-7 Glide-On Eyeliner Pencil

COVERGIRL Lash Blast Clump Crusher Mascara

Physician’s Formula Happy Boost Bronzer

The best sunscreens for summer

the best sunscreens

Best physical–SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50: Physical sunblock is one of the best options for sun protection and I really love this version from SkinCeuticals.  With SPF 50 and a little color-infused technology, the water-resistant block uses titanium and zinc oxide to protect you.  It’s good stuff, trust me.

Best for the beach–Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Spray SPF 70: I feel like so many of my friends hate putting on sunscreen once we’re already at the beach, so this is the PERFECT option for those picky few.  The spray form prevents sticky sand hands and the technology provides salt and water-resistant sun protection that’s also broad-spectrum.

Best for hydration–L’OREAL Sublime Sun Sheer Protect Sunscreen Oil Spray SPF 50+: At first glance, I thought this was tanning oil, the most insane product in existence.  But at second glance, I realized that L’OREAL had the foresight to create a sunscreen oil (e.g. NOT for tanning), which is actually quite genius.  You get all of the benefits of oil (the moisture, vitamins, etc.) but are also protected with SPF 50.  If only this existed when I was in high school…Also, for every Sublime Sun product sold in the U.S. (through the end of this year), L’OREAL will donate $1 to the Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) for the L’OREAL Paris-MRA Team Science Award. Over the next three years, they will donate over $750K to the MRA.

Best for touch-ups–Clinique Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Sunscreen Targeted Protection Stick: It’s always good to keep a little SPF stick like this in your purse, for those “ooops, I forgot” times.  A stick like this is perfect for those tiny spots that are hard to cover like your ears, nose, cheek bones, etc.

Best for the face–Kiehl’s Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream SPF 30: So this isn’t the traditional sunscreen, per say, but going with the fact that you should be wearing SPF every day (especially on your face), I really recommend this version from Kiehl’s.  It’s a powerful, skin fortifying anti-wrinkle cream that goes on nicely and doesn’t feel greasy.

Best high end–Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection SPF 50+: I’ve blogged about Shiseido sunscreen a few times before.  While a little pricey, yes, this is hands-down the most luxurious sunscreen that I’ve ever used. I hoard it.

Best natural–Yes to Cucumbers Natural Sunscreen SPF 30: Perfect for anyone who likes to do the natural skin care thing (OR has sensitive skin).  This mineral-based formula provides SPF and also contains soothing ingredients like aloe and cooling cucumber…plus you can use it on your face and body and won’t have any breakouts.

The Monday Rundown

the monday rundown

Tibi Stripe Camisole: My black and white obsession is one of those things that will never end, so I’m sure that you’re not surprised with this choice.

Clinique A Different Nail Enamel for Sensitive Skin in “Juiced Up”: I’d love to meet the scientist/R&D person at Clinique who thought up the brilliant idea of creating a nail polish for sensitive skin.  Who would’ve thought it would be so genius?  The polish goes on smooth and lasts longer than most.

Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Candy Bars: I think everyone has fond childhood memories that involve Girl Scout cookies, so when they partnered with Nestle Crunch, I was really excited to try these out.  My favorite?  The Thin Mint version, of course…but they’re all good.  Seriously.

Furbish Brass Urchin: My whole body cringed when I read the name of these:brass URCHIN.  I’m insanely allergic to sea urchin, in case you didn’t know.  But, alas, these are actually pretty cool and would look good on a coffee table of end table.
