90s Icons

90s icon birthday 3

When I started thinking about my birthday this year, I originally didn’t want to do anything.  I mean, last year I turned 30 which is really the last epic birthday that I ever imagined for myself, as weird as that sounds; but I know myself well enough to know that I would definitely be sad if I didn’t celebrate in some way.  And then, in true form, my “simple” and “small” party turned into a theme party, at Riviera 31, with about 35 people…I’m a simple woman, with simple needs (said no one about me EVER).

I just CAN NOT do anything small, which is why I decided to dress up as one of my high school idols…CHER HOROWITZ from CLUELESS.  I found the perfect red dress, a white feather boa, and even found a 90s style flip phone (WITH AN ANTENNA) on Ebay for $8.  I also created 90s style photo props, like “The Rachel” below, so my friends and I could take photos with even more 90s nostalgia.

I should also mention that I created an excel doc with 20 examples (with links) of 90s icons that so that my friends would have NO excuse not to dress up.  Examples included “FRIENDS,” “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead,” “Clarissa Explains It All,” etc.  Yeah, I’m not type A at ALL.  Putting my crazy aside, I was SUPER impressed with what everyone came up with; in fact, people went beyond my list and really impressed me with their creativity.  We had a few Kelly Kapowskis, a few Courtney Loves, Blossom, TWO AL Borelands from “Home Improvement (I MEAN!)…my friends are amazing.  I had a ton of fun, but I think the best part of the party was that I actually got to witness how many amazing people I have in my life, who actually care about me enough to put on a ridiculous outfit and go to a fancy hotel on a Saturday night.  A big thank you to Riviera 31 at The Sofitel and, of course, my friends…who, like I said, laugh at me on a daily basis but also truly accept and love me for who I am, crazy theme party thrower and all.

Take 20 minutes to CLEAN your purses, you know Cher would do it…or at least ask Lucy to get it done. I just read THIS article and am totally freaked out. (image via Free to be Lea)

Three Questions With Twink Caplan (a.k.a Miss Geist from Clueless!)

ms-geist-clueless

Q: What’s your favorite memory from filming “Clueless” and what’s your worst memory?

A: My on-screen wedding day!  I negotiated (pleaded) with my BFF and the director/writer, Amy Heckerling, to be my other bridesmaid along with Alicia.  Being in front of the camera was her least favorite thing, next to wearing pink, but she did it for me.  Carl Gottlieb, my male BFF (writer of JAWS, etc) was the minister who married Wallace Shawn and me.   Amy wrote a scene we didn’t end up using — Alicia (Cher’s) dream/nightmare of Paul Rudd and I getting married too.  So I got to marry and kiss both Wally and Paul.  Mona May designed my exquisite gown from scratch…it was stunning and I had to use an old fashioned “slant board” because I couldn’t sit in it!  Watching the fighting over my bouquet was hilarious, and the entire day felt like a real wedding.  There was no worse day on the film…We had a refreshing cast with energy and optimism.  We filmed in L.A. and were able to create jobs and opportunities all around town.  Amy’s script was clever and inventive and watching it come to fruition was sweet.

Q: What advice would you give your 22-year-old self?

A: Don’t fall in love with more than one guy at a time and the friends you make before 30 may be your friends for life.  Try to choose wisely.  Some friendships are gambles.  Know when to cut your losses.

Q: What’s your favorite line from “Clueless”?

A: Cher is talking to Tai and Dionne about virginity, and says “You see how picky I am about my shoes and they only go on my feet.”

Special thanks to my colorist, Erick from ItsJustBeauty.com and Sally Hershberger, (also Twink’s colorist!) for hooking me up with this amazing interview.

Lessons I Learned From Clueless

il_570xN.428010317_g3sr

It came out in 1995, when I was only in 6th grade, but guys, I learned some serious LIFE LESSONS from this epic movie.  Aside from learning that boys almost never call when they say they will (hence, Christian above), I also learned the below.

Tell me, what did you guys learn from Clueless?

  • “I never rely on mirrors, so I always take Polaroids”Mirrors can totally make you look bigger or smaller than you actually are so, since Polaroid cameras are basically extinct, I sometimes still take iPhone photos of myself to see how I actually look.  Say what you want, but it works.
  • “Whatever you do, keep your hands on the wheel at all times!!!”Sure, I couldn’t drive when this movie came out but I certainly learned a valuable lesson about driving on the freeway…which, by the way, still scares me sometimes.
  • “Yeah, I hope not sporadically”Simply put, I learned the definition of the word “sporadically.”
  • “I do not wear polyester hair, okay?!”Before this line, I didn’t even know people could wear polyester hair or hair that wasn’t their own, for that matter.
